Biden set to visit Metro Detroit Thursday for UAW event after receiving endorsement: reports

(WWJ) — President Joe Biden is reportedly set to pay a visit to Metro Detroit Thursday, a week after receiving a ringing endorsement from the United Auto Workers as he seeks reelection.

While details surrounding the event were not immediately disclosed, including exactly when and where it will take place, the White House confirmed the trip Tuesday afternoon, according to a report from Politico.

The event, expected to take place somewhere in Metro Detroit, comes a little more than three weeks ahead of the Feb. 27 Primary Election in Michigan, which is again expected to be a key battleground state in the 2024 Presidential Election.

It will be Biden’s first visit to Michigan since he joined UAW members on the picket lines during last fall’s auto strike against the Detroit Three automakers. At the time, Biden stood in solidarity with the striking workers, saying “you deserve what you’ve earned.”

Thursday’s event will look to rally more support on the heels of the UAW’s endorsement and “give the president a platform to tout his support for labor in a state that boasts a heavy concentration of union members,” according to the Politico report.

Shortly after the union’s endorsement, former President Donald Trump — expected to be Biden’s challenger in this year’s election — criticized UAW President Shawn Fain on his Truth Social page. Trump called Fain a “dope” and referred to him as a "weapon of mass destruction."

He also criticized the auto industry’s shift to electric vehicles, saying it will hurt the U.S. economy and benefit China.
