BODY CAM: New footage released by police show Grand Blanc Township officers racing to confront church shooter

GRAND BLANC (WWJ) -- Police have released body cam footage of the response to the Grand Blanc Township church attack.

The 47-scond clip, played for Jon Hewett and other reporters, shows responding officers ordering Thomas Sanford over a dozen times to drop his weapon before the fatal shots were fired by police.

"So, what you're about to see here is two officers running to the sounds of gunfire to save lives; very courageous actions," said Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye. "This is what law enforcement is trained to do, and this is how law enforcement should respond to these incidents."

"The reason why we put this out is so we could all begin to heal," Renye said.

At the news briefing Friday, Renye explained that the body cam footage allowed investigators to revise their timeline as to how long it took responding officers to neutralize the threat.

After the attack on Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints last Sunday morning, police initially said officers fatally shot the suspect about eight minutes after the first call for service.

Renye said further investigation revealed that, in fact, the incident ended much sooner; about three minutes and 33 seconds after that initial 911 call.

According to police and the FBI, Sanford drove his pickup truck into the building during a crowded Sunday service and begin shooting, before setting the church on fire.

Four congregants were killed, and eight more wounded, police said.

On Thursday, doctors shared an update: Of the eight victims taken to Henry Ford Genesis Hospital, five have since been released. The other three are said to be improving.

The motive in this case remains under investigation.
