WATCH: 'Come on, buddy!' Sheriff's deputy races to the rescue of dog tethered to burning Macomb Township home

MACOMN TWP. (WWJ) -- A Macomb County Sheriff's deputy and firefighters are being recognized for their heroic efforts on the scene of a house fire in Macomb Township.

As seen on body cam video released by the sheriff's office on Tuesday, the deputy jumped to the rescue of a family pet who was chained outside the burning home, in the 46000 block of Brentwood St., near Fairchild Rd.

At around 12:40 p.m. on Feb. 17, emergency crews responded to the scene after a call came in from a resident reporting smoke and flames wee coming from a gas dryer in the basement.

The caller said she'd put the family dog outside on its tether before calling 911, and there was no one else in the house.

Deputies arrived, got the caller into a patrol vehicle to stay warm and safe, and then realized that the dog was still tied up outside the burning home.

As scene in the video, Deputy Eric McCombs rushed and grabbed a leash from his patrol vehicle, ran to the side of the house, and quickly and calmly secured the dog.

"You good; I see you, I see you!" he told the dog and he approached with a leash in hand. "You, big guy, come here, come here! No, you're good, your good," he repeated.

Once the dog was on the leash, the pair then ran back to the parked sheriff's vehicle as McCombs encouraged, "Come on, buddy!" before placing the animal in the care of its grateful owner.

No injuries were reported in the fire, although the home is a total loss.

"The outstanding communication by Dispatch and the quick actions of the MCSO Deputies on scene, ensured the safety of the two residents of the home and the family dog," states a news release by the sheriff's office. "Sadly, the heroic efforts of the Macomb Township Fire Department were not enough to save the home from the fire."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
