Detroit Auto Show moving back to traditional January dates after two years in September

DETROIT (WWJ) — There will be no Detroit Auto Show in 2024.

That’s because organizers of the North American International Auto Show are moving the event back to its traditional mid-January dates in 2025.

WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert confirmed Thursday the event, which had been held in late September the last two years coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, will begin with the Charity Preview on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025 and open to the public the following day.

The 2025 show will run through Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20.

Rod Alberts, executive director of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association that runs the NAIAS, told Gilbert there were “too many distractions” in the September window.

“You’ve got Michigan and Michigan State football, you’ve got the Lions, there’s a lot of other activities, some people going Up North,” Alberts said. “So we feel like having something in January when people are having cabin fever, it’s just a better time of year and it’s been a date that’s always worked for us.”

The last January NAIAS was in 2019, prior to organizers’ plans to shift to a summer schedule. Those plans were interrupted in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, but resumed in 2022. Organizers feel the show gained better traction with fewer events happening in the area.
