FERNDALE (WWJ) - Could a little family-owned Metro Detroit donut shop be one of the secrets to the Detroit Lions success?
On Friday morning, WWJ's Charlie Langton checked out the Apple Fritter Donut Shop in Ferndale -- a known haunt for several Detroit Lions players -- where workers were already in the middle of preparing a very special order of blue-and-white decorated football donuts.
"Specially made donuts for a very important person," the employee told Langton as she boxed up the pastries not moments before Lions backup quarterback David Blough walked through the door.
"We love Apple Fritter Donut Shop in the Lions' quarterback room," Blough told Langton, adding that starting QB Jared Goff is "an apple fritter or kind of a glaze twist guy."
But as much as the quarterbacks love the sugary sweets, Blough said it's 6'5", 311 lbs. starting center Frank Ragnow that can eat the most.
When asked by Langton if the Lions felt good heading into the weekend when the Lions host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday at Ford Field, Blough responded "we're ready to go, thank you."
The Apple Fritter Donut Shop, located at 741 E 9 Mile Road, is well-known in Metro Detroit bakery beloved by local residents that serves a variety of fritters and donuts in flavors ranging from cinnamon glaze pecan to bacon maple.
Classic flavors like glazed and chocolate are also available.
"All donuts are made fresh each day, ensuring that you get the perfect, fluffy texture and delicious taste with every bite," the bakery states on their menu. Guests with dietary restrictions can also choose from a variety of gluten-free and vegan options.
"If you're in a rush or prefer to enjoy your donuts at home, the shop provides convenient takeout and delivery services," the menu continues. "You can savor their mouthwatering treats wherever you are."
Blough said various Lions players pick up orders from the bakery the Friday before home games -- perhaps providing the fuel needed for a Lions win, Langton joked.
The Lions, still riding the high of winning their first playoff game in 32 years, will host their first NFC divisional round appearance since the 1991 playoffs when the Bucs come to town.
The two teams are meeting up for the second time this season after Detroit won their regular-season matchup 20-6 at Tampa Bay.
Kick off is Sunday, 3 p.m. ET on NBC or you can listen to the play-by-play broadcast on WWJ's sister-station 97.1 the Ticket.
