DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police are searching for two armed suspects at large after a drive-by shooting sent two small children to a hospital, early Thursday morning.
According to investigators, the kids — an 8-year-old boy and 7-year-old girl — were asleep in their beds in their home on Arcola Street, near Van Dyke and Lynch, west of City Airport.
Police said two men pulled up in a black pickup truck and began shooting at the house, spraying bullets that went through the walls and hit the children, who were in an upstairs bedroom.
The mother and father were home at the time of the shooting, as well as other children, but only the two kids were hurt.
The wounded children were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. They were last reported in stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.
Speaking to reporters later in the morning, Detroit Police Assistant Chief Eric Ewing said multiple shots were fired, although they're still not sure how many as the investigation continues.
Ewing said it is believe at this time that the home was targeted, but a motive is not yet known. The suspects fled the scene.
Calling the shooting "a senseless act," Ewing noted that violent crime — including homicides and nonfatal shootings — is down in the city when compared with this time last year, but it's clearly not enough.
Police are asking anyone with information about the suspects to call the DPD or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up.
