Driver clocked at 118 mph on I-75 in Oakland County speeds away from traffic stop, causes head-on crash: police

Four people in two vehicles were seriously injured

TROY (WWJ) -- A Genesee County man is facing charges after a traffic stop, chase and crash, last month in Oakland County.

The Troy Police Department said the 29-year-old Mount Morris resident was charged with three counts of Flee and Elude = second degree in connection with the incident on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, in Troy.

Just before 2:30 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop on the driver of a 2023 Genesis for speeding with radar readings reaching 118 mph on I-75, near Crooks Rd., according to a police report.

When officers approached the driver, who had one passenger in the car, the driver said he didn't have his driver's license or other documents with him.

Police said the man then drove away, fleeing the traffic stop with officers in pursuit.

When the suspect got off the freeway at Adams Rd., officers followed him to Square Lake Road, but lost sight of him, ending the chase.

About a minute later, dispatched advised the officers that there had been a serious crash at Square Lake and Glyndebourne.

At the scene, police discovered that the Genesis crashed head-on into a Lexus RX, causing "significant damage" to both vehicles, and causing the Genesis to catch fire, according to police.

Officers helped both men get out of the burning Genesis, police said, and they were taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The two people in the Lexus were also taken to a hospital with serous injuries, police said.

The Genesis driver, whose name was not immediately released by police, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on each charge.
