Reckless driver fleeing from police on Southfield Freeway goes airborne, kills one after striking passenger vehicle
(WWJ) - A 20-year-old Detroit man was arrested on Monday evening following a reckless driving crash on the Southfield Freeway that left an innocent man dead, troopers said.
Michigan State Police said troopers with the Metro South Post were patrolling on the southbound side of the Southfield Freeway around 9:15 p.m. on December 11th when the saw the driver of an Infiniti sedan speeding and making several lane changes while driving recklessly.
The troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the Infiniti kept going and tried to exit the freeway at Schoolcraft Road.
According to MSP, the Infiniti struck the gore of the exit ramp and went airborne before coming down on a passenger vehicle on the service drive.
The Infiniti rolled over and landed on the roof, troopers added. The suspect driver, identified as a 20-year-old Detroit man, escaped the crash with minor injuries.
He was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation and will be jailed afterward, MSP said.
The driver of the passenger vehicle, a 59-year-old man from Detroit, was pronounced dead at the scene.
First Lt. Mike Shaw said the case will be presented to the prosecutor's office for review with charges pending against the suspect driver.
"The traffic crash reconstruction unit and the Second District Special Investigation Section are completing their investigation," Shaw added.
