DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are working on locating two people -- a driver and passenger -- that took off after a vehicle slammed into a tree in east Detroit, killing one women and injuring a man and three children on Friday.
Detroit Police Public Information Officer Dan Donakowski told WWJ that investigators are still piecing together what led to the crash which occurred around 10 a.m. on Jan. 19 in the 20500 block of Mound near 8 Mile on the city's east side.
FOX2 reported a U-Haul truck was involved in the crash, but Donakowski did not confirm the vehicle type, only that there was a single-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of one woman.
He also confirmed three children and an adult male were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Witness Richard Adams Jr. told FOX2 he was at his job at a nearby auto parts store when the wreck happened right outside. He rushed to help the occupants still trapped inside and tried to free the woman.
Adams said the crash was so forceful, the dash had compressed into the woman, who was bleeding and struggling to breathe.
"It was a bad sight," he told FOX2, adding that he also saw one of the children under a seat while another had gone through the windshield and was laying on the ground.
Authorities arrived at the scene and extracted the women, who died of her injuries. She was only identified by Donakowski as a "Jane Doe."
He confirmed an unknown driver and another passenger took off from the scene on foot -- as of Saturday afternoon, police were still working on locating them.
The crash remains under investigation. No other details were released.
