Suspected drunk driver who wrecked on Lodge Freeway while driving wrong way was also illegally carrying 2 firearms: MSP
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - State police say it was 'very fortune' nothing worse happened when they arrested an alleged drunk driver on Tuesday after he allegedly wrecked his vehicle while going the wrong way on two Southfield freeways -- and was discovered illegally carrying two guns.
Michigan State Police's First Lt. Mike Shaw said in a Thursday morning update that troopers were notified of crash involving one vehicle with 911 callers stating the driver had been going the wrong way on the Southfield Freeway around 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Troopers responding to the M-39 area in Southfield found debris in the roadway and eventually came across a disabled vehicle in the center lane of the northbound Lodge Freeway without a tire.
Shaw said troopers approached the driver, who was identified as a 38-year-old man from Farmington, and saw he was impaired. They administered a series of sobriety tests which the driver failed.
The driver was arrested, Shaw stated, and as he was searched by troopers, they found a loaded 9mm magazine was found on his person. A Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 pistol was also found in the center console when his vehicle was searched.
To make matters worse, MSP said the 38-year-old had a revoked CPL.
"There is absolutely no reason to drive impaired and we are very fortunate this suspect didn't hurt anyone," Shaw added. "Add on the fact of the illegally carried gun and this could have been a recipe for disaster."
A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw and the driver was lodged at the Oakland County Jail.
No other details were released.
