MSP asking for help finding suspect who fired shots, causing deadly, fiery crash on Southfield Freeway in Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) – Michigan State Police officials are asking for the public’s help finding suspects who allegedly fired shots at a truck on the Southfield Freeway, causing the driver to crash and die late Friday night.

Police began receiving calls around 11:45 p.m., reporting a crash on southbound M-39 near Plymouth.

Witnesses say the driver, since identified as a 49-year-old Detroit man, lost control of the truck, hit another vehicle and ran up the right embankment. The truck then hit the concrete wall and he was ejected.

The truck then rolled down onto the freeway and caught fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the other car sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators also found a bullet hole in the bed of the victim’s truck and then found several shell casings and a ShotSpotter activation in the area as well.

As of Sunday afternoon, MSP officials say there is no description of the shooters or the vehicle they were in, so they’re asking for help from the public to find the suspect or suspects.

“While many witnesses concentrated on the crash we now know from the on-scene investigation that this was a homicide,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said.

Officials are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or knows something about it to call 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. All Crime Stoppers tipsters will remain anonymous.
