(WWJ) As spring approaches, more road construction will be popping up in Metro Detroit that could affect your drive.
As part of the ongoing "Restore the Reuther" project, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that ramps linking I-75 and I-696 will be closing, beginning Saturday morning.
Starting at 7 a.m. on Feb. 28, MDOT says crews will begin closing the westbound I-696 ramp to northbound/southbound I-75, and the northbound I-75 ramp to westbound I-696.
Then, in a couple of weeks, the southbound I-75 ramp to westbound I-696 will also close.
"The ramps with I-75/696, that whole interchange, are the same age as that freeway we are rebuilding, and it's time to reconstruct those ramps," said MDOT spokeswoman Diane Cross.
She said these ramp closures will remain in place until "early summer."
The posted detours for drivers are Van Dyke Avenue, M-59 and 8 Mile Rd.
The north and southbound I-75 ramps to eastbound I-696 will remain open.
This latest comes as road crews have been completely rebuilding I-696 from I-75 to the Lodge Freeway, necessitating a full stop to eastbound I-696 traffic. Currently, westbound traffic has been diverted to the newly-build eastbound side.
The "Restore the Reuther" project is expected to wrap up late in 2026. Get updates and details here.
