Man charged with wrong-way crash while fleeing police that killed Farmington Hills parents of six

(WWJ) – A Romulus man is facing charges for allegedly killing a Farmington Hills couple in a wrong-way crash on M-10 while fleeing police last weekend.

Angel Melendez-Ortiz, who remains hospitalized from his injuries sustained in the crash, was charged Wednesday with two counts of second-degree murder and multiple other felonies.

Melendez-Ortiz, 35, was expected to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon, five days after the crash that killed Jen and Ryan Ambrosio, who were on their way home to their six children after a date night.

It all happened around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6 when Michigan State Police troopers spotted a stolen vehicle in the area of Greenfield and 8 Mile Road.

The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office says Melendez-Ortiz fled police at speeds of more than 100 mph and turned off the lights of the stolen vehicle as he tried to get away.

After an extended chase, Melendez-Ortiz crossed over the median on Telegraph Road and drove south in the northbound lanes before driving the wrong way down the exit ramp from M-10 and onto the freeway, according to the prosecutor's office.

He allegedly continued speeding the wrong way on M-10 with the lights off until he slammed head-on into the Ambrosios' car, killing both of them.

Melendez-Ortiz was taken to the hospital to be treated. He remained hospitalized Wednesday prior to the arraignment, scheduled for 2 p.m., officials said.

In addition to second-degree murder, Melendez-Ortiz was charged with two counts each of first-degree fleeing and eluding police causing death, reckless driving death and operating with a suspended/revoked/denied license causing death.

If convicted, he could face up to life in prison for the second-degree murder charge and 15 years for each of the other felonies.

"These are senseless deaths, and I have authorized the highest possible charges for this crime. We will pursue justice for these victims and their entire family, including their young children, and we will hold this defendant accountable." Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said, per a producer.

A GoFundMe page organized to help the Ambrosios' children, ages 2-9, has raised more than $350,000.
