Massive fire at Roseville industrial building; 'shelter in place' order due to smoke and chemical concerns has been lifted

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) -- A fire at an engineering facility in Macomb County prompted a shelter-in place order for neighbors and some college students on Tuesday, but there were on injuries reported.

Roseville firefighters were on the scene for several hours after a fire broke out at RCO Engineering Company near 12 Mile Rd. and Groesbeck, sending smoke billowing in the air that could be seen for miles.

The initial call about an explosion at the facility came in shortly after 10 a.m., and WWJ's Jon Hewett reported that fire crews continued their work on extinguishing a fire well into the late afternoon.

Earlier, a shelter-in-place order was issued for residents downwind of the factory due to smoke and chemical concerns.

The Macomb County Emergency Management office directed residents for 1/2 mile down wind to the southeast from the 12 Mile and Hayes intersection to remain indoors, closing all windows and doors. This order affected the Macomb Community College South Campus.

The order was lifted after about three hours, officials said, when air quality testing indicated that it was no longer necessary.

Roseville Fire Chief Keith Jacobs said there was heavy smoke, some surrounding buildings were evacuated, but nobody was hurt.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and EPA were on site later in the day, in an effort to catch any possible chemical contaminants that could make their way from the scene into local waterways.

There is no word at this time on what caused the fire, as the investigation gets underway.
