MSP investigation into fatal police shooting in Kalkaska Co. underway

(WWJ) - The Michigan State Police are investigating a fatal police shooting in Kalkaska County.

Deputies from the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence in Fife Lake on Ingersol Road for a domestic assault on Jan. 27, according to a statement released by the Michigan State Police.

The suspect, a 35-year-old man from Fife Lake, reportedly fled the scene.

On Sunday, the suspect was seen on a trail camera located on a neighboring property.

The owner of the property asked a neighbor to check on the “security of his trailer” because he didn’t live nearby.

The neighbor was confronted by the suspect once they reached the property. The suspect allegedly “exited the trailer and fired a gun into the air,” according to the press release.

The neighbor left the area and contacted police.

A Michigan DNR conservation officer and a Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw the suspect run into the woods when they responded to the call. They took cover after hearing gunfire while pursuing the suspect, according to the press release.

A K-9 team from the Michigan State Police and a MSP Emergency Support Team member arrived after the gunfire was heard and tracked the suspect to an "elevated enclosed tree stand."

A confrontation occurred once troopers approached the stand, and they fired at the suspect, the press release said.

MSP Aviation and additional EST members arrived after the the encounter.

Authorities said the suspect was found to be deceased when a drone was deployed to see inside the tree stand. Upon entering, troopers found a loaded gun under the suspect’s body.

The MSP Forensic Science Laboratory from Grayling and the MSP Sixth District Investigative Response Team are conducting the investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
