(WWJ) Love them or hate them, roundabouts can be found in every corner of our state these days.
Reaching out to the public on social media this week, the Michigan State Police is reminding motorists on how to properly navigate these occasionally troublesome traffic circles.
"Every-so-often we need to talk about the proper use of roundabouts," wrote the MSP Eighth District. "No sense complaining about them as they are the way of the future. Studies prove they are safer and more efficient. So, let's review the basics."
MSP listed the following steps:
1. Slow your speed as you approach.
2. Check and yield to oncoming traffic.
3. Don't stop if there aren't any vehicles in your path.
4. When clear, continue through.
5. Exit by using your turn signals.
6. Allow larger vehicles (semi-trucks) both lanes.
7. Success!
Now more than two decades since the state's first roundabout was constructed, roundabouts are becoming more and more common both in Northern Michigan and in Metro Detroit. According to Michigan Auto Law, there are now more than 100 roundabouts in the state, with more planned each year. In 2023, the number was reported as 180 statewide.
