WOODHAVEN (WWJ) - Roughly 12 to 15 Mustangs near the Flat Rock Assembly Plant were stolen early Tuesday morning just one week after thieves took a dozen vehicles from the same area, authorities confirmed.
Detective Sgt Adam Ruffner with the Woodhaven Police Department told WWJ that the mustangs were being stored in a lot across the street from the stamping plant when they were allegedly taken by thieves around 1:30 a.m.
Ruffner said the group got away with at least a dozen vehicles, worth at least $60,000 a piece.
They were last seen driving northbound on I-75, WWJ's Charlie Langton reported.
The latest incident comes less than a week since thieves took another dozen Mustangs last Thursday.
Ruffner said two vehicles were recovered just last night, with one located in Woodhaven and the other found in Tennessee from a previous robbery.
Ruffner said while the plant experiences two thefts a year, this amount is unusual.
On the other side of Metro Detroit, police in Warren reported at least two Jeep Wangoneers stolen in a similar robbery attempt at the Chrysler Warren Truck Assembly plant.
Langton reported live from the scene on 8 Mile and Mound where he said thieves smashed through a gate to get onto one of the lots.
It is unclear if the two incidents are related.
They are the latest alleged cases in a string of auto thefts that have plagued Metro Detroit assembly plants over the summer.
Back in July, multiple Ford Raptor trucks had been stolen from a lot in Dearborn.
In the same month, thieves stole three brand new Mustangs from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant.
