PORT HURON (WWJ) — The “all clear” has been given more than 12 hours after an armed and armored man barricaded himself inside a Port Huron home Saturday night.
Port Huron police officials announced late Sunday morning that the 23-year-old suspect had been taken into custody and the shelter-in-place order had been lifted for residents in the area of 12th and Chestnut Streets.
Authorities say the suspect fired a shot at the home in the 1100 block of Chestnut around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after an altercation with his family. The man would go on to fire multiple shots throughout the night, including shots that took down a Michigan State Police drone during the standoff.
Family members were able to flee the home before police arrived, except for a 16-year-old who remained inside the home but was eventually able to escape after being held against their will, according to Port Huron police.
The suspect barricaded himself in the house armed with multiple firearms and fired several additional rounds while failing to comply with police commands to come out.
Authorities said in an update around 6:45 a.m. Sunday that the suspect fired several more shots out of the home throughout the night.
Police officials had been asking the public to stay in their homes and avoid standing near doors and windows, given the fact the man was armed and authorities deployed an irritant gas into the home throughout the night and morning hours in an attempt to get him out.
“Thank you everyone for your cooperation and patience as this incident unfolded. We were working alongside our partner agencies to resolve this incident as quickly and safely as possible,” police officials said in a Facebook update Sunday morning.
He caused "extensive damage" to the home before eventually exiting after 15 hours and surrendering to police.
During the standoff, the suspect was observed wearing body armor, and they had access to several firearms. He was able to shoot a drone used by the tactical teams and shot at a Michigan State Police armored vehicle, resulting in minor damage, according to police.
No injuries were reported.
