A Metro Detroit 'Secret Santa' drops rare coin in Salvation Army red kettle in St. Clair Shores

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - The Salvation Army received a big gift from a mystery donor.

A South African gold Krugerrand, a rare coin, was dropped into a Salvation Army red kettle at the St. Clair Shores Kroger on Harper Avenue over the weekend.

Officials say a Krugerrand has been put into a red kettle in Macomb County 11 years in a row.

In a press release, the Salvation Army said, that according to Monex, the Krugerrand is estimated to be worth $2,031.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit said its fundraising goal for the 2023 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign is $7.9 million.

Over the past year, the Salvation Army helped to provide “more than 2.4 million meals, more than 530,000 nights of shelter, nearly 56,000 Christmas toys and gifts for children and seniors, resolution of nearly 1,500 legal issues through the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic,” officials said.

Donations to the Salvation Army can be made at their famous red kettles or online.
