Romulus man faces terror threat and firearms charges for shooting outside middle school, trying to get in with gun

ROMULUS (WWJ) -- A Romulus man is facing a long list of criminal charges, after authorities say he fired a gun outside a middle school when he was denied entry to get his son.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on Thursday announced its case against 44-year-old Shawntez Marshaun Gregory, in connection with the incident that at Romulus Middle School, on Wick Road, on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

According to Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Gregory's son attends the school, and was inside the building at the time.

“This case is every parent’s nightmare," said Worthy, in a statement. "The defendant allegedly fired a gun several times in proximity to the school when he was denied entry to get his son. The immediate reporting of an active shooter by the school allowed the Romulus Police to quickly respond and apprehend the defendant. Luckily, no one was harmed."

According to investigators, Gregory allegedly stood just one foot away from the building and fired several shots. He did not shoot at the school building, officials said, and no injuries were reported.

The school was placed on lockdown, and Romulus Police responded to reports of an active shooter. Officers arrived quickly and arrested Gregory. A gun was recovered.

Gregory is charged with the following counts:

- False Report or Threat of Terrorism, Schools – Intentional Threat to Commit Act of Violence Against School, School Employees or Students with Specific - Intent to Carry Out or Overt Act;
- Carrying a Concealed Weapon;
- Possession of a Weapon in a Weapons Free School Zone;
- Reckless Use of a Firearm; and
- two counts of Felony Firearm

Gregory was arraigned on the charges via Zoom in 34th District Court Thursday afternoon.

Gregory was uncooperative during the proceeding, refusing to state his name for the record, and telling the judge: "Don't play with me."

Bond was denied, and he was remanded to jail to await his next court appearance, set for Jan. 20.
