Suspect in custody after gunfire erupts during Christmas morning dispute, leaving 1 in critical condition

WARREN (WWJ) - A 23-year-old Warren man is in critical condition after he was shot during an argument with others at a residence on Christmas morning, police say.

Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said in a prepared statement that the suspect in the shooting has been arrested.

According to Dwyer, officers along with fire units responded to the call of shots fired in a residential area of 9 Mile and Hoover around 10:20 a.m. on December 25th.

"Officers arrived on scene and discovered a 23-year-old male had been shot after an apparent argument between other people at the residence," Dwyer said.

Firefighters rushed the victim to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The alleged shooter appeared to flee the scene prior to officers arriving, the department added.

Investigators spoke with several people at the scene while evidence technicians gathered evidence, all to help piece together what led to the shooting.

Dwyer said that the shooting does not appear to be a random incident.

“Although still early on, it appears that all persons involved were acquaintances to each other," the commissioner added. "This is an active investigation with investigators processing evidence and speaking with witnesses. We hope to have more complete information regarding this unfortunate incident in the near future.”

WPD officers conducted surveillance on "known associates" of the alleged suspect, Dwyer said.

At approximately 10 a.m. Dec. 26, the alleged suspect was seen in a woman's vehicle. Officers pulled the vehicle over near 10 Mile and Lorraine Avenue. The suspect was taken into custody without force or incident, authorities said.

“Today’s arrest is yet another example of the outstanding work performed by the men and women of the Warren Police Department," Dwyer said in a statement. "In less than 24 hours after this incident occurred, we have identified and arrested the suspect without incident. This Department takes a zero-tolerance approach to violent crime and makes solving such cases the top priority. Our clearance rate for these types of cases is remarkably high because of the hard work and dedication our officers and investigators have for arresting those responsible as quickly and safely as possible. I commend the members of the Patrol Division, Detective Bureau, and Special Operations and Investigations Unit for working tirelessly on this case from the beginning.”

The alleged suspect was taken to the Warren Police Department for processing. Investigators said they expect to give the evidence to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office for a charging decision by the end of the week.

Anyone with any additional information regarding this incident has been asked to contact Det. Stieber at 586-874-4841.
