LIVONIA (WWJ) -- Police swarmed a Livonia neighborhood on Wednesday, dealing with a barricaded gunman holed up inside a home.
Shortly before 10 a.m., family members called police for a welfare check on a man in a condo on Ann Arbor Trail Ct. at Parent Street, just west of Wayne Road.
When officers arrived, authorities said the 35-year-old man began shooting, firing one or two rounds from the home.
No officers were hit.
Police backed off, and called in the Wayne County SWAT team for backup.
Several hours later, well into the afternoon, it remained a very active scene.
"They've been putting pepper spray into this house all day since about 11 o'clock this morning," WWJ's Tim Pamplin reported. "The first volleys went in and now we're at about 4 or 5 o'clock in the afternoon and they're about to fire another one...I think this is number six, the sixth round of tear gas going into the home."
"They've had no communication with this man; they're just waiting it out," Pamplin said. "They can't rush in, they they just want to take their time, try and smoke the man out with the CS gas. But none of that seems to be working as you see there smoke now beginning to billow out from this condominium."
Livonia Police said the man was believed to be suffering a mental health crisis. They urged the public to steer clear of the area.
Law enforcement was on the scene for nearly 12 hours, with the suspect finally being taken into custody at around 10 p.m.
Police said weapons were recovered, and there was no further threat to the public.
"We want to thank our community for your patience and cooperation throughout this incident. This safe outcome was made possible by the dedication, perseverance, and professionalism of our first responders," the Livonia
