YPSILANTI (WWJ) -- A man is in custody after a police standoff that lasted more than 30 hours in Ypsilanti.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's office said they took a 53-year-old man into custody late Monday night, after he barricaded himself in the upper levels of a home.
Ypsilanti Police were scene Sunday and Monday — along with Washtenaw County Crisis Negotiators and the Metro SWAT team — on West Cross Street, near the campus of Eastern Michigan University.
According to police, the initial call came in at around 12:20 p.m. on Sunday about a person who was banging on neighbors' doors with what initially appeared to be a big stick.
Police said, when officers arrived, they found that the man didn't have a stick, but in fact was apparently wielding a sword.
The man confronted officers before retreating into a home.
The man then barricaded himself inside the house, and negotiations began to try to convince him to come out.
After hours of negotiations, the police department said officers at one point were able to clear part of the residence, but efforts continue to get the man safely into custody.
"The situation is taking a significant amount of time because a rushed response increases the risk of injury to everyone involved, including the individual and responding officers," the Ypisalinti PD said, in a Monday afternoon update.
"The individual remains inside the residence and has barricaded himself in a portion of the home while still armed with the sword. It is unknown whether additional weapons are present."
Police said there were no injuries, but they advised the public to avoid the area up until the man ultimately turned himself into SWAT and crisis negotiators.
People in the area said the man was upset over a rent dispute.
