University of Michigan student killed after crashing into tree while skiing in Aspen

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - The University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor is mourning the death of one of their students following a skiing incident over the weekend in Aspen, Colorado.

According to her family, 22-year-old Eileen Sheahan, of Evanston, Illinois, died on Saturday (Jan. 27) after she struck a tree while skiing at the Aspen Highlands resort.

Family members said Sheahan was a senior at the University of Michigan and was due to graduate in May with a degree in economics. Friends remembered her for her "shining light" and ability to befriend people wherever she went.

“Eileen had the most profound effect on those around her during her short time on earth," her obituary stated. "She was graceful, kind, hilarious, beautiful and brilliant. She had boundless energy and was the consummate doer. She always put her family, friends and others first. She was a rock to so many, and a bright light wherever she was."

The 22-year-old was a student ambassador at U-M and was a member of the Alpha Phi Fraternity.

University Dean of Students Laura Blake Jones told MLive that support services are available for staff, students and the Wolverine community as the campus mourns Sheahan's passing.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, classmates and all who knew her,” Jones said.

The university’s Counseling and Psychological Services along with the Dean of Students Office and the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office are all available for those who need additional help.

Sheahan's funeral arrangements have been scheduled for this upcoming weekend with Visitation on Sunday, February 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Home in Skokie, Ill.

A Funeral Mass is set for Monday, February 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Old Saint Patrick's Church located on 700 West Adams Street in Chicago, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to The Eileen Sheahan Memorial Scholarship at The Academy at St. Joan of Arc grade school in Evanston or to Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill.

"Both schools were near and dear to Eileen’s heart," family members said.
