Detroit house explodes, reduced to rubble on day new tenants were supposed to move in

DETROIT (WWJ) -- There's a pile of rubble where a house once stood after an explosion, Thursday afternoon, on Detroit's west side.

Authorities said no one was injured when a single-story house blew up in the 19400 block of Forrer Street, in the area of 7 Mile Rd. and Greenfield.

Reporting from the scene, WWJ's Tim Pamplin said: "This house exploded with gusto, sending what remains of the home skyward — up into trees, up onto the rooves of neighboring homes, damaging some of those homes. The headline here: No injuries to report, amazingly."

Pamplin said the rental home was supposed to be getting some new tenants today. They were in the process of moving in, but were thankfully not inside when the explosion happened.

Neighbors said they smelled gas, and DTE Energy confirmed that a DTE crew had been there earlier in the day and had turned the gas lines on. But at the time when the crew left, there were no known issues.

"About two hours after they left, the whole thing blew up," Pamplin reported.

Fire crews remained on the scene into the early evening.

The investigation is ongoing.
