All public schools in Oakland, Wayne, Macomb, Washtenaw and Livingston Counties closed Wednesday for cold weather

DETROIT (WWJ) — Thousands of students across Metro Detroit will have another day off school on Wednesday, thanks to Mother Nature.

All public schools in Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Livingston and Washtenaw Counties will be closed Wednesday due to the cold weather, as Southeast Michigan is gripped by a brutal cold spell.

With temperatures hovering just above zero on Tuesday night, wind chills are expected to approach 20 below overnight and into the early morning hours when students would be making their way to bus stops or walking to school.

A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for all of Southeast Michigan until noon Wednesday, according to AccuWeather. With wind chills as low as -20, frostbite can set in on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

If you have to go outside, you are urged to wear warm clothing, a hat and gloves, and cover your face.

More than 400 schools across Metro Detroit were closed Tuesday, a day after having the day off Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
