Do Trump or Harris have the 'temperament' to be president? Here's what voters think

Do former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have the temperament to be president?

According to a new poll, a slight majority of Americans believe Trump does not, while more believe that Harris does.

In the latest Economist/YouGov poll, 51% of respondents said Trump lacks the temperament to be president, while 41% said he possesses it. Another 8% were not sure.

When broken down by partisan affiliation, 89% of Democrats said Trump lacks the necessary temperament. In contrast, 85% of Republicans said he has the right temperament. A slight majority of independents, at 52%, said he lacked the temperament to be president.

A large generational divide also emerged with 52% of those 65 years and older saying the former president possesses the necessary temperament, while 58% of 18-29-year-olds said he does not.

On the other hand, 45% of respondents believe Harris has the temperament to be president, versus 42% who think she does not and 12% who are undecided.

Along party lines, 87% of Republicans said Harris lacks the necessary temperament. In contrast, 91% of Democrats said she has the right temperament. Slightly more independents think Harris lacks that special something (38%) versus those who say she has it (36%).

Younger generations are more likely to say Harris has the right temperament, including 53% of 18-29-year-olds, while older generations think she does not, including 55% of those 65 years and older.

The poll, which was conducted mostly before the Democratic National Convention, shows Harris holds a 3-percentage-point lead over Trump among registered voters -- at 46% to 43%.
