A shooting broke out at Brown University Saturday afternoon, according to the Providence, R.I., University. Students and the campus community were told to go on lockdown.
“We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we do not yet have information about their condition that we are in a position to share. They have been transported to local hospitals,” said the university at 6:05 p.m. Saturday evening.
At around 4:22 p.m. the school alerted its campus to an active shooter incident near the Barus & Holley Engineering department. In addition to staying behind locked doors, the campus community was told to silence phones as law enforcement searched for the suspect.
Per the school, it was focused on working with local law enforcement and medical car providers to ensure safety and to determine who was in the building when the shooting broke out. Multiple exams were scheduled in the building from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the university explained.
“We can confirm that support services are on site. We have also relocated students to get support services at a secure location,” it said.
Brown also acknowledged that another report of a second shooting near Governor Street “is unfounded” but said that sheltering in place was still critical as of 6 p.m.
“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island,” said President Donald Trump in a Saturday social media post. “The FBI is on the scene. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and the families of the victims!”
“FBI personnel are on the scene and assisting this evening after the shooting at Brown University and we will provide all capabilities necessary. Please pray for all those involved. We will update with more information as we are able,” said Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel on X.
