Tomlin: Russell Wilson in 'consideration' to start against Jets

Mike Tomlin says Russell Wilson is in “consideration” to start on Sunday night against the New York Jets.

The Steelers Head Coach said during his weekly news conference, “Over the course of the week, I got comfortable with his ability to display his health. Now its about knocking the rust off, he did some of that last week.”

From what Tomlin said, it sounds like Wilson has a chance to beat out Justin Fields for the QB1 position.

“He is in consideration this week, we’ll see where that leads us . . . both guys at the quarterback position are scheduled to work (Wednesday) and we’ll just walk it day-by-day,” added Tomlin.

Fields has helped the Steelers to a 4-2 record this season. He has 1,106 passing yards this season with five touchdowns passing and one interception.

“Justin has been an asset for us,” said Tomlin. He added that Fields’ mobility is an “X-factor” that Wilson does not have.

While he wouldn’t say it will be a competition this week between Wilson and Fields he did say he is “looking for top quality play and winning.”

Tomlin said he hasn't thought he will get the primary reps with the first team in practice.

A starter will be named closer to game time. The Steelers play the Jets in primetime on Sunday night at Acrisure Stadium.
