A lot of taxpayers procrastinating on their 1040s

Be grateful if you've filed your tax returns -- a lot of Americans will be up to their eyes in paperwork this weekend as they scramble to make the Monday filing deadline.

The number of people filing before the month of April this year fell nearly one and a half percent. More than a million people who had the work done by this time a year ago were still working on it.

"From our experience, those who owe tax tend to wait until the last minute, or the last couple of weeks, and those who get a refund tend to file earlier in the season," said Clay Sanford with the IRS.

The IRS has received nearly 93 million returns so far, and the agency expects more than 14 and a half million people will be requesting an extension -- which would be a record.

Sanford says when it comes to an extension, there's one important thing to remember: "Just don't get it confused with paying."

You still have to make a good faith effort at estimating what you owe, and paying it, or the IRS can come down on you pretty hard.
