As the holiday season ramps up and crowds fill parking lots, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is reminding families that a few simple precautions can help keep the season both merry and safe.

Sergeant Brandon Veal says safety during the holidays falls into two main categories; staying protected while you’re out and about, and making sure your home isn’t an easy target.

Veal says, while out, it all starts in the parking lot.

“Park in well-lit areas, and don’t leave big bags or purchases sitting on your seats,” he advises.

Keeping valuables out of view is key, because thieves are looking for what he calls “desirable items.”

“The things you value most including watches, cell phones, designer bags, shoes; those are exactly what thieves go after, he says.

At home safety is just as important, especially with many people traveling or out late.

“The biggest thing you can do is have a well-lit home,” Vele says. “Light up every area where someone could make entry.”

He also recommends trimming tall shrubs and installing a home camera system.

“In my experience, cameras do make a difference. he adds.

While the reminders are serious, Veal stresses that the holidays don’t have to feel threatening.

“This isn’t a time to be fearful, just careful,” he says.

With a little awareness and a few extra steps, JPSO says families can enjoy the season with more peace of mind.
