(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police in Des Plaines say a registered sex offender has now been charged in the kidnapping and assault of a 16-year-old girl.

Des Plaines authorities say 40-year-old Christopher Grygiel had already been on their radar. He has been a registered sex offender after an incident two decades ago -- the predatory criminal sexual assault of a 5-year-old.

Des Plaines police say last month, Grygiel kidnapped a 16-year-old girl as she was walking near a park. She fought back and tried to get away, but Grygiel overpowered her and sexually assaulted teen, authorities say.

DNA evidence was matched with Grygiel’s, whose information was already on file because of his criminal record.

He was arrested Wednesday, charged with aggravated kidnapping and criminal sexual assault and was denied bond.
