(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly has been selected as chairperson of the state’s Democratic Party.
Kelly narrowly edged out Chicago Ald. Michelle Harris as the party’s state central committee voted Wednesday evening.
Each candidate had influential backers to replace former state Rep. Michael Madigan, who ended his political career last month amid a political corruption scandal. Madigan had led the state party since 1998.
Kelly is the first Black woman to be elected to the chairperson post.
During her acceptance speech, she vowed to unite the party.
