Advocates for bike safety in Chicago will gather tonight to remember a city worker, killed last week while riding in Bridgeport.

“It’s unacceptable and we need change.”

Kyle Lucas with the group Better Streets Chicago among those mourning the loss of Riley O’Neil, a Department of Transportation employee who died Friday while attempting to get around a vehicle stopped in a marked bike lane along Halsted Street.

“Riley would be alive today if there were protected bike lanes on Halsted. That’s just the matter of fact. What happened to him would not have happened to him in a protected bike lane.”

Authorities say O’Neil was struck by a semi after losing control of his bike and falling into the roadway.

Jim Merrell is with the Active Transportation Alliance.

“I think it’s important not to overlook the role that played in this incident and thinking about having clear guidelines on truck routes or the operating hours of those large vehicles so they’re not sharing the road during peak travel times.”

Lucas says he and others will honor O’Neil’s mission of making biking safer in Chicago.

“If our elected officials continue to drag their feet on this, we’ll find new ones.”
