Cardinals hope for 100% capacity at Busch Stadium in June

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals are increasing capacity at Busch Stadium for the upcoming Cubs series (May 21-23), reducing the distance between seating pods from six feet to three feet, creating an expected crowd of around 30,000 for each game. Ticket sales are underway now for the longtime rivalry.

Why hasn't the team gone beyond this month with that plan? There's a reason for that.

"Beginning of June, we're going to actually sell at a homestand at a time," VP of ticket sales Joe Strohm revealed on KMOX's Total Information AM on Wednesday.

"Because we're hopeful that the numbers continue to drop, and sometime maybe in June we could get to a point where we're at full capacity."

On Friday at noon, the Cardinals will have tickets on sale to the general public for the six-game home stand on June 3–9 vs the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians.

Hold on, back that up. Did he say "full capacity?"

He did.

Busch Stadium, full? Let us dream for a moment. Hot dogs, peanuts, Cracker Jack, beer, soda, sunscreen... and the "Best Fans In Baseball" watching the first-place Cardinals.

How do we get there?

Let me direct you to the Cardinals Club at 700 Clark Street. That's where a vaccination clinic is being held this week (Wed 9a-4p, Thurs 9a-4p, Fri 9a-1p) to administer Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson shots to protect against COVID-19. The more the vaccination numbers go up (and positivity rates drop), the better chance of the turnstiles turning 45,000 times.

Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III told Total Information AM that he recently spoke with St. Louis mayor Tishaura Jones on the possibilities moving forward.

"She likes where the numbers are headed," DeWitt said, "but we're still not quite there in vaccinations."

So the Cardinals are playing their part, offering a voucher good for two free tickets to a 2021 game to anyone who receives a vaccine at their event.

"It's free parking to come down and do this," DeWitt said. "It'll be real easy. Our numbers are getting better in this region -- of course, they are everywhere -- and it's all because of the pace of vaccinations. We've got to keep that going."

Meanwhile, the pace of ticket sales for the Cubs series is brisk, to say the least.

"We probably sold about 7,000-8,000 tickets (Tuesday) night once people heard about the Cub tickets being available," Strohm said. "It was a hard ticket to get when we only had 13,000-14,000 fans coming to the ballpark."

Soon, it will be 30,000. Can they get to 45,000?

Let's just say they have a... shot.
