Dick Van Dyke revealed the big keys to his 60+ year career.
In a clip shared by CBS for the upcoming “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic” special, the iconic performer said he never exactly worked too hard.
“I would do a movie or something and come home, and just sit down, wait for the phone to ring. I wasn’t aggressive,” he said. “So, I was out of work a lot because I didn’t go out and look for it.”
Van Dyke said he didn’t even really care too much being unemployed for extended periods.
“I didn’t mind it. I’m pretty lazy. When I’m having fun, you know, all right. But I’m a lazy person,” he said. “I don’t have a lotta drive. I’ve been very lucky.”
“It just happened!” Van Dyke said of his career, which includes highlights such as “Mary Poppins” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”
The 98-year-old actor is still performing as he appeared on “The Masked Singer” in February and said he keeps going because it’s still fun.
“It’s such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love, that you’d do for nothing. I feel sorry for people who hate their job. I look forward to going to work every morning.”
“Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic” airs Dec. 21 at 9pm EST on CBS.
