13 LI students hospitalized after pickup truck crashes into school bus

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — More than a dozen elementary school students were hospitalized on Long Island Monday after their school bus collided with a pickup truck, police said.

Nassau County police said the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. outside the Meadowbrook Elementary School in East Meadow.

The 2009 Toyota pickup truck traveling southbound on Old Westbury Road crashed into a 2005 school bus near Melanie Drive.

According to police, 41 children ages 5 to 11 were on board at the time. Thirteen of them were transported to the hospital along with the bus driver for minor injuries.

Medical personnel at the scene screened about 18 students, and their parents were allowed to take them home.

The 57-year-old Toyota pickup truck driver suffered injuries to his hip and was transported to an area hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition.

Police haven't said what may have sparked the crash. No criminality has been reported as the investigation continues.
