MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — An 86-year-old Nassau County woman was conned out of nearly $10,000 by suspects who claimed her daughter had been arrested and needed the money to post bail, police said Monday.

Nassau County police said the Massapequa woman received a phone call from an unknown man on Saturday who claimed to be a police officer. He claimed her daughter had been arrested and needed $9,800 for bail.

The victim was then connected to another man who claimed to be a public defender handling the case. That man told the victim to withdraw the $9,800 from the bank and contact him when she had the money.

The woman complied, according to police, and a woman in her 30s arrived at her home around 11 a.m. to collect the cash. She then fled the scene in a
white Toyota Sienna.

The victim learned she was duped Sunday once she spoke to family members and was told that her daughter had not been arrested.

Nassau police are urging the public to be on alert and to remind vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors about potential scams or fraud.

Anyone with information regarding this incident — or similar scams — is asked to call 911 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
