NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations announced on Tuesday its intent to investigate an incident in which police shot a man at a mental health facility after he stabbed two officers.
Enrique Lopez, 56, was killed in the Dec. 28 shooting, and the two officers were hospitalized, authorities said.
Officers were responding to reports of a man attacking his roommate with a fire extinguisher just before 5 p.m. at a nonprofit home for people with disabilities and mental health issues when the altercation occurred, according to officials.
The Attorney General’s Office is empowered to investigate any police killing, and Attorney General Letitia James has instructed the OSI to investigate and, if necessary, prosecute all police killings in the state.
James had already opened a preliminary inquiry into last week’s shooting. Tuesday’s announcement indicates the OSI’s intent to continue probing potential wrongdoing.
