RIDGEWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — An "extremely irate" man armed with a butcher knife was arrested Sunday night in a New Jersey parking lot after fleeing the scene of a domestic incident and repeatedly attempting to resist arrest, police said.
Ridgewood Police Chief Kenneth R. Ehrenberg said an alert was sent out at 8:15 p.m. after Keith Hanlon, 41, fled the scene of a domestic violence incident.
Hanlon, who was armed with a butcher knife, fled in his car and said he wanted to be killed by police, Ehrenberg added in a news release.
Minutes later, two officers, including an off-duty officer on his way to work, noticed the vehicle traveling on Route 17 south onto Route 4 eastbound. The car pulled into the Atrium Building on Route 4 eastbound.
The chief said Hanlon opened his car door, and officers attempted to speak with him.
Hanlon was "extremely irate" and slammed his car door shut before driving away to a different area of the parking lot.
When his vehicle finally stopped, the officers deployed spike strips under his tires to prevent him from driving away again. The officers attempted to negotiate with him for around 20 minutes.
Ehrenberg said Hanlon refused to communicate and turned his car radio up to full volume. At that time, additional officers and departments arrived on the scene.
During the attempted negotiations, officers had an opportunity to overpower and remove the suspect from his vehicle. After struggling with the officers, Hanlon was handcuffed and placed under arrest. Police recovered the butcher knife from inside the vehicle.
He was transported to New Bridge Medical Center for evaluation.
Hanlon was charged with resisting arrest in Paramus and was also facing domestic violence charges from the Ridgewood Police Department.
The details surrounding the domestic incident weren't immediately clear.
