SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) – The body of a missing Spring Valley firefighter who became trapped inside a burning assisted living facility was recovered overnight Tuesday, officials in Rockland County said.
“Early this morning the recovery efforts were successful and the body of a fallen firefighter, a hero for all, was recovered and removed with great solemnity by his fellow brothers and sisters in the fire and emergency services,” Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann wrote on Facebook.
At a press conference Wednesday, Rockland County Fire Coordinator Christopher Kerr said a body was recovered from the rubble of the Evergreen Court Home for Adults in Spring Valley around 11:52 p.m. Tuesday.
Video from Rabbi Yisroel Kahan, of the Rockland County Commission on Human Rights, shows the firefighter’s body being escorted in a procession through Rockland County early Wednesday morning.
At Wednesday's press conference, Rockland County Executive Ed Day confirmed that the fallen firefighter was Jared Lloyd, who is said to be a 15-year volunteer with the Spring Valley Fire Department.
Lloyd became trapped during Tuesday morning’s fire at the assisted living facility on Lafayette Street.
Dozens of the facility's 112 residents were pulled to safety and taken to nearby facilities after the blaze broke out around 1 a.m., officials said.
One resident of the facility, an unidentified man, died at a hospital after the fire, officials said.
Two firefighters were also injured, including one who was kept hospitalized overnight Tuesday due to high carbon monoxide levels in his blood, according to officials.
Thirteen injured residents were taken to hospitals and one remained in critical condition on Wednesday. Many other residents were treated at the scene and refused transport, officials said.
The fire destroyed much of the assisted living facility, with part of the building collapsing during the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Rockland Sheriff Louis Falco said Wednesday that teams were still "going through the rubble" and it hadn't yet been determined if the fire was suspicious or accidental.
