The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 20, while the child was playing with friends at the playground located on Coles Way in Lakewood Commons.
Lakewood Township Police Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said when the helmet got caught on the playground apparatus, the child’s “airway was compromised, causing him to lose consciousness.”
“Fellow playmates noticed that he was in need of serious medical attention and were able to render assistance to free him from the apparatus,” Staffordsmith added.
Hatzolah emergency medical services performed CPR on the boy before he was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where he remained in stable condition as of Wednesday night, according to police.
Following the accident, Mayor Raymond Coles ordered every township playground to be checked for any similar hazards.
