FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A BMW driver sped through a red light on Long Island Wednesday night in a desperate attempt to escape a road-raging man who'd just slit the throat of her passenger, Suffolk County police said as they searched for the assailant.

The chaotic scene erupted around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday off the Long Island Expressway in Farmingville.

The BMW driver was headed westbound on the LIE with two passengers when she got into a road-rage dispute with a man driving a sedan, believed to be a royal blue Mazda3 or Mazda6 with New York plates, police said.

Both drivers got off the LIE at Exit 63 and stopped at a red light at Express Drive North at North Ocean Avenue, where the man exited his sedan and tried to open the driver’s door of the BMW.

The door was locked, so the man reached into the open window of the rear passenger’s seat to grab the driver, police said.

A man in the passenger’s seat grabbed his arm, sparking a struggle between the two men.

During the confrontation, the mystery driver slashed the passenger’s throat, causing a 4-inch laceration, police said.

The BMW driver hit the gas and sped through the red light to escape the assault, according to police.

She then drove to the CityMD urgent care on North Ocean Avenue for help.

The passenger was transported from the urgent care to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A female passenger in the BMW was not injured.

The attacker, believed to be in his mid-30s or 40s, returned to his sedan and drove off.

He was last seen headed northbound on North Ocean Avenue, according to police, who said he may have had a female passenger in his car.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.
