FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A father of three drowned on Wednesday after jumping into a river to rescue his children in New Jersey, authorities said.

At approximately 2:13 p.m., police received a 911 call reporting a man in the water, with three children on shore, in the area of Canal Road between Coppermine Road and Old Georgetown Road in Franklin Township.

Responding officers found three children, ages 13, 11, and 8 out of the water.

The children's father, Rolando Camarillo-Cholula, 42, was unable to be located.

Witnesses told responding officers that the children went into the water and quickly became distressed.

Camarillo-Cholula went into the water to help, pulled his children to the shallow water, but struggled to maintain his balance, Franklin Township Police Lt. Vincent Wilson said.

Arriving emergency personnel entered the waterway but rescue efforts to find him were unsuccessful.

The children were treated at the scene and released without further medical attention.

At approximately 5:28 p.m., Camarillo-Cholula was recovered by the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Dive Team.

Officials are investigating the factors that contributed to the incident.
