Man, 39, drowns, girl pulled from ocean at NJ beach

AVON-BY-THE-SEA, N.J. (1010 WINS) – A 39-year-old man died and a girl was hospitalized after being pulled from a New Jersey beach Friday morning, authorities said.

Officers responded to Sylvania Avenue Beach in Avon-by-the-Sea at 8:35 a.m after reports of two swimmers in distress, Avon police said.

A rescue team searched the waters for about 10 minutes before finding the girl "in distress" and then pulled her from the ocean, according to Capt. Tony Pecelli.

The girl was rushed to a hospital in unknown condition, authorities said.

A short time later, the rescuers discovered a man submerged in the oocean and pulled him from the water.

He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Pecelli added.

The man was the girl's father, News12 reported. According to the outlet, the girl had gone for a swim and got caught in a rip current and was pulled several yards out into the ocean.

Her father then jumped into the water attempting to save her. the outlet added.

Officials have not released his identity.
