NEWARK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A man shot three people, two of them fatally, before be was shot and killed by police in Newark on Wednesday night, officials said.

A 7-year-old girl and a man were both killed in the shooting at a home in the city's South Ward.

Police responded around 8:45 p.m. to a 911 call at the three-story house on Johnson Avenue.

Officers confronted a man with a gun on nearby Elizabeth Avenue. He wouldn't drop the weapon and they shot him, police said.

Inside the home, police encountered a terrible scene with multiple gunshot victims.

The 7-year-old girl had been fatally shot in the chest. A man who was shot and critically injured died at a hospital.

A third victim was wounded and hospitalized. Their condition wasn't immediately known.

"Tonight, there was a tragic shooting that left three people killed, including a child, and the perpetrator," Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement.

"Three people dead. It’s tragic," the mayor continued. "This is the reason why we have to come together to deal with issues of mental health, drug abuse, anger, conflict, and all kinds of other issues that we see in our communities in general."

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin is leading an investigation into the shooting.

The victims and the suspect haven't yet been identified.
