OAKDALE, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island teen was arrested this week for damaging a historic building as part of a social media challenge, Suffolk County police said Thursday.

The 18-year-old, who was not identified by police, allegedly threw a rock through a window at the former Dowling College property in Oakdale around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

He was caught after a Suffolk County police officer patrolling the area on Idle Hour Boulevard noticed three teen males walking in the area after the window was broken.

The vandal told the arresting officer that he was taking part in a social media challenge to damage historic buildings.

Police said they’ve been investigating similar acts on the property and have been conducting patrol checks following community complaints.

The teen was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and issued a field appearance ticket.

Anyone with information on the incidents is asked to call the Fifth Precinct Crime Section at 631-854-8532 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
