NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- At least 22 firefighters were injured, three of them seriously, as they battled a four-alarm house fire Friday on Staten Island, the FDNY said.

Heavy smoke was seen billowing out of the home at 88 Shotwell Ave. in Arden Heights after the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m.

The fire was brought under control by 4:20 p.m. but operations were ongoing, according to the FDNY.

The three seriously injured firefighters’ exact injuries weren't immediately known. Seventeen other firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the department said.

Fire officials said there was a “major collapse” of a rear extension but that the injured firefighters were trapped by the fire, not in the collapse.

No civilians injuries were immediately reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
