NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A foul odor led NYPD officers to a Coney Island apartment, where they found a man’s rotting body in a sleeping bag, police said Friday.

The disturbing find was made Thursday evening after neighbors called police about a smell coming from the apartment at 2832 West 23rd St. in NYCHA’s Carey Gardens development.

Officers entered the apartment around 5:15 p.m. and found the decomposing corpse in a sleeping bag, police said. A garbage bag covered the upper half of the body.

The remains were removed from the building and taken to the medical examiner’s office, which will determine the man’s cause of death.

The man has not yet been identified as the investigation continues.
