The victims had agreed to meet with two men to sell a gray Toyota Rav 4, anonymous police sources told the New York Daily News. When they arrived, the suspects shot both of them and stole the car.
The shooting took place around 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of East 37th Street and Glenwood Road, authorities said.
One of the victims, a 24-year-old man, was reportedly hit in the chest and his 29-year-old acquaintance was hit in the leg.
One of the suspects fled in the Rav 4, while the other fled in the car they arrived in.
The two victims, now stranded without a car, walked 10 blocks to Downstate Medical Center.
The man hit in the chest died there, and the man with a leg wound is in stable condition, according to officials.
Police have not yet made any arrests, and an investigation is ongoing.
